Participation in an Extensive Programme to Save this Critically Endangered Amphibian Species.

This cooperation with the Greek Herpetological Society and the University of Athens constitutes the contribution of Pelargos NATURA to the effort to save a species of endemic frog  (Pelophylax cerigensis), the rarest species of anuran amphibian in Europe, whose presence is limited only to the island of Karpathos, where it is known as the Karpathian Frog. A small population has miraculously survived in increasingly difficult conditions over the last 50,000 years! Our planned activities consist of small but significant interventions (such as maintenance and small construction works to maintain fresh water in specific areas for the survival of the frogs during the summer months), as well as the creation of original educational material for informing and sensitizing the children of Karpathos, so that they can become the future guardians of this species. Our inspiration came from university professor and Chairman of the Greek Herpetological Society Dr. Panagiotis Pafilis’ strong commitment to save this species, driven by pure conservation ethos.
