GRAY WOLF & GOLDEN JACKAL (Canis lupus & Canis aureus)

Population Identification of Gray Wolf etc Large Mammals in Specific Areas

In collaboration with Biosphere, we installed ten specialized motion detection cameras in carefully selected locations on Mount Parnitha for two years, to determine the population of wolves living on this mountain, unique worldwide in that it hosts such a large population of this iconic species right next to a large capital city.  We also contributed in the collection of wolves’ feces, so that their DNA analysis could determine their dietary preferences, thus evaluating this species’ effect on the neighbouring endangered Red Deer population.

Additionally, in 2019 we contributed to the organization of a significant international conference on the Golden Jackal, also organized by Biosphere.

Recently, we have purchased and are currently training four new operators of highly specialized drones with advanced technical capabilities, which will allow us (through a new conservation programme under development, licensing and organization) to obtain more accurate measurements and behaviours of specific predatory mammals, such as wolves and jackals, as well as their prey such as deer and wild boar. Our ultimate goal is to develop and propose to local authorities and other stakeholders comprehensive management measures.
