MEDITERRANEAN MONK SEA (Monachus monachus)

MOm/ Fisrt Aid and Rehab Center

On the initiative of Pelargos NATURA, the model First Aid & Rehabilitation Center of MOm was created and equipped at the facilities of Attica Zoological Park, with the aim of caring for and ideally preparing young seals (who are usually separated from their mothers due to weather conditions) for reintegration into the sea. These seals are ultimately released into the National Marine Park of the Northern Sporades by MOm. With the help of satellite transmitters, the young seals are monitored during their first months at sea to ensure their survival, aiming to enhance their critically endangered and sensitive population. It is noteworthy that the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) is the most endangered marine mammal in Europe. Given that approximately 90% of the global population lives in Greece, we feel that we have an obligation to contribute to MOm’s efforts. It is important to note that each female seal saved and reintegrated into the sea can give birth to up to 20 pups over her lifetime!
